Many years ago a Shepherd boy lived in a village. There were hills, pastures, and forests all around the village. He worked for a man in the village. He called this man his master. His master kept his sheep in a pasture near a dark forest. He spent many days in the pasture watching his master’s sheep. The days in the pasture seemed long to the Shepherd boy. The Shepherd boy would set on a hill each day watching over his master’s sheep.
He had to keep the sheep save from the wolves in the dark forest. He often played with his dog. They would run through the pasture. He threw sticks and stones for his dog to chase. The shepherd boy had a wood flute. He learned to play many songs on his flute. He sat on the hillside during the day playing his flute. His dog would set right beside him. Each day the shepherd boy watched his master’s sheep. He ran with his dog and played his flute. Each day seemed long and dull to the shepherd boy. One day when the shepherd boy was sitting on the hillside , he thought about the wolves in the forest. He wondered what he would do if he saw a wolf. This made him think of a plan to amuse himself. The shepherd boy’s master had told him to cry for help if he ever saw a wolf. His master said, “ if you cry for help the villagers will come running. They will drive the wolf away.” Now the shepherd boy wanted to do something fun. He had not seen a wolf, but he ran towards the village anyway. He shouted ,” Wolf ! Wolf !” at the top of his voice. The villagers heard his cry for help. They quit their work and ran excitedly to the pasture. When they got to the pasture they found the shepherd boy laughing heartily. The villagers were angry with the shepherd boy for playing such a trick on them. They left the pasture and went back to the village to work. A few days later the shepherd boy was bored. Once again he shouted ,” Wolf ! Wolf !” the villagers quit their work and ran excitedly to the pasture. Again the villagers were laughed at by the Shepherd boy. The villagers angrily left the pasture and went back to their work in the village. One evening the Shepherd boy was watching the sunset. The sky was getting darker. The Shepherd boy heard a noise behind him in the forest. Then a wolf appeared. The Shepherd boy ran toward the village. He shouted at the top of his voice,” Wolf ! Wolf ! “ . the villagers heard his cry for help, but no one ran to help. They thought the Shepherd boy was playing another trick on them. The wolf killed many of the sheep in the pasture and then slipped quietly into the woods.
